Gatwick Airport History
The origination of the name Gatwick dated back to 1241 when Richard de Warwick gave the rights to some land in the manor of Charlwood to a gentleman called John de Gatwick and his heirs. The land consisted of four acres of meadow and 18 acres of land and remained in the de Gatwick family until the 14th century when it was passed to various families.
In 1928 Dominion Aircraft Limited based one of its aeroplanes at Gatwick.
Ronald Waters were the new owner of Gatwick and he obtained the first flying licence for 1 guinea and he had the airport licenced in August 1930 and flying started immediately.
In 1931 Gatwick was registered as a private airfield and was owned by the Surrey Aero Club and jockeys would arrive by aeroplane to ride at the adjacent Race course.
Today Gatwick is a busy international airport transporting over 30 million passengers a year to many countries throughout the world.
Gatwick was owned by British Airports Authority Limited from 1st April 1966 until 2nd December 2009. On 17th December 2008 it was decided by the Competition Commission that Gatwick should be sold by the British Airports Authority and Global Infrastructure Partners became the new owners. The airport was sold for £1.51 billion pound to the same owners of City Airport. In 2010 Global Infrastructure Partners sold a minority stake in Gatwick Airport to South Korean National Pensions Service and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority.
Gatwick Airport Information
Gatwick Airport is in West Sussex and is in the Crawley Borough Council. It is positioned south of London and the journey times from Gatwick to Central London vary according to the time of travel.
There is a train service from Gatwick to Paddington in Central London which runs every 15 minutes and the journey time is about 30 minutes. Gatwick Airport travels to 300 destinations throughout the world and operates a single runway. There is a secondary runway, but this can only operate when the main runway is out of operation. Gatwick is policed by The Gatwick District of Sussex Police, which is responsible for the complete airport. This includes the aircraft, and in certain circumstances aircraft which have just landed.

Gatwick is one of the major airports in London, along with Heathrow Airport, Luton Airport and Stansted Airport. It transports over 30 million passengers to many countries throughout the world.
The airport has two terminals, North and South, which are positioned in the middle of Crawley, East Grinstead, Horsham and Haywards Heath which is the main airport south of London.
In 2010, 31.3 million passengers flew through Gatwick.
