Stansted Airport is on the site of a Roman burial site, which dates back to AD 100-200. It began life as a USAAF runway in 1942 during the Second World War and the D-Day Bombers led their assault from Stansted Airport.
During this assault, more than 600 aircraft flew from the airport to travel over the beaches of France. B.A.A. Limited which owns Stansted Airport was established in 1966 after the Airports Authority Act was established and in 1970 the main terminal was extended to cope with the increase in the number of passengers.

In 1986 the work started and The Queen opened the terminal which had cost £400 million pounds.
